What is the earned income credit?
The earned income credit can erase income tax and come back as a refund. It is claimed on the tax return. A normal pay stub has no line for it, and this page does not estimate the amount.
The credit is a refund, and the stub will not show it
The earned income credit is for people who work and whose earned income falls under limits Congress sets. It can wipe out federal income tax. Because it is refundable, the IRS can pay the rest even when no income tax was owed. Payroll does not compute it. Open a stub from January through December and the credit is simply absent. You claim it when you file.
The largest 2026 amount this site will state is $8,231, for three or more qualifying children, from Revenue Procedure 2025-32. Smaller families have smaller maximums. Those other maximums are not copied here. A partial table is how a person picks the wrong row and plans a refund they will not receive.
Why this page will not estimate your credit
The credit grows as earned income grows, then shrinks once income passes a threshold. How fast it shrinks depends on filing status and on how many qualifying children lived with you. Investment income over the IRS limit can disqualify the credit entirely. The child has to meet the IRS tests for relationship, age, and residency. Those tables are easy to mis-copy.
A wrong refund estimate is a worse service than silence. Use the IRS instructions for the credit, or a preparer, for your own figure. This page will not invent a phase-out, and it will not ask for a child’s information.
The W-4 is a separate piece of paper
Withholding follows Form W-4. Expecting the credit does not, by itself, change the next paycheck. Someone who wants less withheld during the year, because they expect the credit after filing, makes that request on the W-4. Leaving the W-4 blank and waiting for the refund is also a decision. The paychecks stay smaller, and the credit, if it is allowed, arrives with the return.
Nothing on this page changes Social Security or Medicare. Those come out of the check whether or not the credit is claimed in the spring. Gross pay and net pay is where to see what the check itself is doing. Reading a stub names the lines that are actually printed.

Questions
What is the largest 2026 amount confirmed here?
The maximum credit with three or more qualifying children is $8,231, from Revenue Procedure 2025-32.
Why is there no credit estimator?
Phase-in and phase-out thresholds were not locked to a single official table on this site. A made-up calculator would be worse than none.
Does the credit change paycheck withholding?
Not by itself. Withholding follows Form W-4. The credit is figured on the tax return.
Where should I check my own credit?
Use the IRS instructions for the credit, or a tax preparer. PaycheckZip.com is not that calculator.
